ArtemisNASA Rover to Search for Water, Other Resources on Moon
As part of the Artemis program, NASA is planning to send its first mobile robot to the Moon in late 2023 in search of ice and other resources on and below the lunar surface. Data from the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, would help the agency map resources at the lunar South Pole that could one …
MarsSalts Could Be Important Piece of Martian Organic Puzzle, NASA Scientists Find
A NASA team has found that organic salts are likely present on Mars. Like shards of ancient pottery, these salts are the chemical remnants of organic compounds, such as those previously detected by NASA’s Curiosity rover. Organic compounds and salts on Mars could have formed by geologic processes or be remnants of ancient microbial life. …
ISSSpaceX’s 22nd Commercial Resupply Mission to Space Station Launches Water Bears, Squid, Solar Arrays
The 22nd SpaceX cargo resupply mission carrying scientific research and technology demonstrations launches to the International Space Station from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida no earlier than June 3. Experiments aboard include studying how water bears tolerate space, whether microgravity affects symbiotic relationships, analyzing the formation of kidney stones, and more. Download high-resolution photos and …
EarthNASA’s S-MODE Takes to the Air and Sea to Study Ocean Eddies
After being delayed over a year due to the pandemic, a NASA field campaign to study the role of small-scale whirlpools and ocean currents in climate change is taking flight and taking to the seas in May 2021. Using scientific instruments aboard a self-propelled ocean glider and several airplanes, this first deployment of the Sub-Mesoscale …
ISSAstronauts’ Spines Under Scrutiny
Astronauts rocket off Earth to spend months isolated in orbit some 250 miles overhead. By any measure, they have fortitude and backbone in spades. Backbone, however, is exactly what’s at risk as astronauts float in low gravity aboard the International Space Station. For every month in space, astronauts’ weight-bearing bones become roughly 1% less dense …
ISSNew NASA Data Sheds (Sun) Light on Climate Models
Have you ever worn a dark T-shirt on a sunny day and felt the fabric warm in the Sun’s rays? Most of us know dark colors absorb sunlight and light colors reflect it – but did you know this doesn’t work the same way in the Sun’s non-visible wavelengths? The Sun is Earth’s power source, …
EarthRobotic Navigation Tech Will Explore the Deep Ocean
Terrain-relative navigation helped Perseverance land – and Ingenuity fly – autonomously on Mars. Now it’s time to test a similar system while exploring another frontier. On May 14, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ship Okeanos Explorer will depart from Port Canaveral in Florida on a two-week expedition led by NOAA Ocean Exploration, featuring …
ISSCan Space Gardening Help Astronauts Cope With Isolation?
It’s a maxim drilled into us at a young age: “Always eat your veggies!” For astronauts on the International Space Station, heeding this well-known advice is both essential and challenging. Health and nutrition are vital to mission objectives, but how do you ensure astronauts get fresh produce to eat when living off the planet? One …
Deep SpaceNASA Moves New Frontiers 5 Call to No Earlier Than 2024
NASA has determined that the next opportunity to propose for the fifth round of New Frontiers missions will occur no later than fall of 2024. Missions in NASA’s New Frontiers Program tackle specific solar system exploration goals identified as top priorities by the planetary science community. The strategy is to explore the solar system with …
