The SunNASA Missions Make Unprecedented Map of Sun’s Magnetic Field
For decades after its discovery, observers could only see the solar chromosphere for a few fleeting moments: during a total solar eclipse, when a bright red glow ringed the Moon’s silhouette. More than a hundred years later, the chromosphere remains the most mysterious of the Sun’s atmospheric layers. Sandwiched between the bright surface and the …
ArtemisKennedy Interns Play an Integral Role in NASA’s Future
By Danielle SempsrottNASA’s Kennedy Space Center Developing models to determine the mass of regolith mined by robots on the Moon. Researching control methods to apply to future launch vehicles. Improving software development and system lifecycles for monitoring rocket performance. These are just a few of the projects that interns at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in …
AsteroidsDART Launch Moves to Secondary Window
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), NASA’s first flight demonstration for planetary defense, seeks to test and validate a method to protect Earth in case of an asteroid impact threat. The mission aims to shift an asteroid’s orbit through kinetic impact – specifically, by impacting a spacecraft into the smaller member of the binary asteroid …
EarthNASA-funded Network Tracks the Recent Rise and Fall of Ozone Depleting Pollutants
A short-lived resurgence in the emission of ozone depleting pollutants in eastern China will not significantly delay the recovery of Earth’s protective “sunscreen” layer, according to new research published Feb. 10 in Nature. Stratospheric ozone, also known as Earth’s ozone layer, helps shield us from the Sun’s harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays. Compounds like CFC-11 (Trichlorofluoromethane, …
MarsSearching for Life in NASA’s Perseverance Mars Samples
When the agency’s newest rover mission searches for fossilized microscopic life on the Red Planet, how will scientists know whether they’ve found it? NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover will be the agency’s ninth mission to land on the Red Planet. Along with characterizing the planet’s geology and climate, and paving the way for human exploration …
MarsNASA’s Next Mars Rover Is Ready for the Most Precise Landing Yet
What to expect when the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover arrives at the Red Planet on Feb. 18, 2021. With about 2.4 million miles (3.9 million kilometers) left to travel in space, NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is days away from attempting to land the agency’s fifth rover on the Red Planet. Engineers at NASA’s Jet …
ExoplanetsNASA’s TESS Discovers New Worlds in a River of Young Stars
Using observations from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), an international team of astronomers has discovered a trio of hot worlds larger than Earth orbiting a much younger version of our Sun called TOI 451. The system resides in the recently discovered Pisces-Eridanus stream, a collection of stars less than 3% the age of our …
MarsInSight Is Meeting the Challenge of Winter on Dusty Mars
As dust collects on the solar panels and winter comes to Elysium Planitia, the team is following a plan to reduce science operations in order to keep the lander safe. NASA’s InSight lander recently received a mission extension for another two years, giving it time to detect more quakes, dust devils, and other phenomena on …
MarsNuclear Propulsion Could Help Get Humans to Mars Faster
As NASA’s Perseverance rover homes in on the Red Planet, engineers on the ground are furthering potential propulsion technologies for the first human missions to Mars. NASA is looking at two types of nuclear propulsion systems – nuclear electric and nuclear thermal propulsion. Nuclear electric propulsion systems use propellants much more efficiently than chemical rockets …
