ExoplanetsNASA Is Taking a New Look at Searching for Life Beyond Earth
Since the beginning of civilization, humanity has wondered whether we are alone in the universe. As NASA has explored our solar system and beyond, it has developed increasingly sophisticated tools to address this fundamental question. Within our solar system, NASA’s missions have searched for signs of both ancient and current life, especially on Mars and …
ISSPartnership, Teamwork Enable Landmark Science Glovebox Launch to Space Station
As the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency‘s H-IIB rocket carries NASA’s Life Sciences Glovebox toward its berth on the International Space Station, hardware specialists at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and their partners around the world are eager to initiate new, high-value biological research in Earth orbit. The JAXA H-IIB rocket, hauling the …
MarsNASA’s MAVEN Selfie Marks Four Years in Orbit at Mars
Today, NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft celebrates four years in orbit studying the upper atmosphere of the Red Planet and how it interacts with the Sun and the solar wind. To mark the occasion, the team has released a selfie image of the spacecraft at Mars. “MAVEN has been a tremendous success,” said Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN principal investigator …
Deep SpaceThree NASA Missions Return 1st-Light Data
NASA’s continued quest to explore our solar system and beyond received a boost of new information this week with three key missions proving not only that they are up and running, but that their science potential is exceptional. On Sept. 17, 2018, TESS — the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite — shared its first science observations. …
ExoplanetsNASA’s TESS Shares First Science Image in Hunt to Find New Worlds
NASA’s newest planet hunter, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), is now providing valuable data to help scientists discover and study exciting new exoplanets, or planets beyond our solar system. Part of the data from TESS’ initial science orbit includes a detailed picture of the southern sky taken with all four of the spacecraft’s wide-field …
ISSThe Space Network: Cell Towers for Astronauts
On Nov. 2, 2000, the first crew to live on the International Space Station arrived. Humans have continued to live and work there ever since. Reliable communications between the crew on the space station and the support team on Earth helps make it possible. Space communications is crucial for most astronaut activities, from performing spacewalks …
ArtemisHow NASA Goddard Tests Tools Astronauts Will Use to Explore Distant Worlds
When astronauts land again on the surface of another world, their limited resources will allow for a short window of time each day to explore their new surroundings. Instruments designed to quickly reveal the terrain’s chemistry and form will help them understand the environments around them and how they change over time. To protect precious …
The SunNASA’s SDO Spots 2 Lunar Transits in Space
On Sept. 9, 2018, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, SDO, saw two lunar transits as the Moon passed in front of the Sun. A transit happens when a celestial body passes between a larger body and an observer. This first lunar transit lasted one hour, from 4:30 pm to 5:30 p.m. EDT and obscured 92 percent …
ArtemisCrawler Driver Takes Mobile Launcher for Test Trek
What does it take to drive one of NASA’s crawler-transporters? “Patience,” says Bob Myers, a mechanical systems engineer on the Test and Operations Support Contract and one of six crawler drivers at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Recently, Myers sat in the operator cab of the crawler-transporter known as CT-2, picked up the …
