Deep SpaceThree NASA Satellites Recreate Solar Eruption in 3-D
The more solar observatories, the merrier: Scientists have developed new models to see how shocks associated with coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, propagate from the Sun — an effort made possible only by combining data from three NASA satellites to produce a much more robust mapping of a CME than any one could do alone. …
MoonExpands Plans for Moon Exploration: More Missions, More Science
Update – September 10, 2018: NASA released the Request for Proposal (RFP) for Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) to industry on September 6, 2018, which opens the formal competition to further expand efforts to support development and partnership opportunities on the lunar surface. Due to the highly competitive environment that exists for this activity, all NASA communication with industry …
ArtemisAround the Moon with NASA’s First Launch of SLS with Orion
Artemis I, formerly Exploration Mission-1, will be the first integrated test of NASA’s deep space exploration systems: the Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the ground systems at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The first in a series of increasingly complex missions, Artemis I will be an uncrewed flight test that will provide …
ArtemisScientists Share Ideas for Gateway Activities Near the Moon
NASA is looking at how the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway can create value for both robotic and human exploration in deep space. In late 2017, the agency asked the global science community to submit ideas leveraging the gateway in lunar orbit to advance scientific discoveries in a wide range of fields. NASA received more than 190 abstracts covering topics such as …
Deep SpacePublic Invited to Come Aboard NASA’s First Mission to Touch the Sun
Want to get the hottest ticket this summer without standing in line? NASA is inviting people around the world to submit their names online to be placed on a microchip aboard NASA’s historic Parker Solar Probe mission launching in summer 2018. The mission will travel through the Sun’s atmosphere, facing brutal heat and radiation conditions …
ISSMaterial Samples to be Tested on the International Space Station
NASA has selected five technologies for its Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE)-11 mission to test them aboard the International Space Station (ISS). MISSE missions enable long-term exposure of materials—such as composites and polymeric specimens—to the inhospitable space environment. The samples remain in space for at least one year, allowing researchers to make meaningful assessments …
EarthNASA Space Laser Completes 2,000-mile Road Trip
Once in orbit after it launches this fall, NASA’s ICESat-2 satellite will travel at speeds faster than 15,000 miles per hour. Last week, the satellite’s instrument began its journey toward space riding a truck from Maryland to Arizona, never exceeding 65 mph. ICESat-2, or the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2, is slated to launch in …
ArtemisOrion Crew Access Arm Installed on Mobile Launcher
By Bob Granath NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida As astronauts prepare for trips to destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, their last steps before boarding an Orion spacecraft will be across a crew access arm on the mobile launcher at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This week, the agency reached an important milestone on the path …
MoonOn Second Thought, the Moon’s Water May Be Widespread and Immobile
A new analysis of data from two lunar missions finds evidence that the Moon’s water is widely distributed across the surface and is not confined to a particular region or type of terrain. The water appears to be present day and night, though it’s not necessarily easily accessible. The findings could help researchers understand the …
