James WebbNew Video Goes “Behind the Webb” To See 100 Points of Light
The newest video in the “Behind the Webb” series, called “100 Points of Light” takes viewers behind the scenes to understand what the Near Infrared Spectrograph or NIRSpec will do when it flies aboard the James Webb Space Telescope. The video was produced at the Space Telescope Science Institute or STScI in Baltimore, Md. and …
ExoplanetsNASA-Sponsored ‘Disk Detective’ Lets Public Search for New Planetary Nurseries
NASA is inviting the public to help astronomers discover embryonic planetary systems hidden among data from the agency’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission through a new website, DiskDetective.org. Disk Detective is NASA’s largest crowdsourcing project whose primary goal is to produce publishable scientific results. It exemplifies a new commitment to crowdsourcing and open data …
AsteroidsHerschel Telescope Detects Water on Dwarf Planet
Scientists using the Herschel space observatory have made the first definitive detection of water vapor on the largest and roundest object in the asteroid belt, Ceres. Plumes of water vapor are thought to shoot up periodically from Ceres when portions of its icy surface warm slightly. Ceres is classified as a dwarf planet, a solar …
MarsNASA Gets Mars 2020 Rover Instrument Proposals
NASA has received 58 proposals for science and exploration technology instruments to fly aboard the agency’s next Mars rover in 2020, twice the usual number submitted for instrument competitions in the recent past, and an indicator of the extraordinary interest in exploration of the Red Planet. The agency is beginning a thorough review to determine …
ISSSpace Station MAXI-mizing Our Understanding of the Universe
Look up at the night sky … do you see it? The stars of the cosmos bursting in magnificent explosions of death and rebirth! No? Well, then maybe you are not looking through the “eyes” of the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) investigation, mounted on the exterior of the International Space Station Kibo module. …
Deep SpaceSpace Radiation Can Affect Rocket Launches
On Jan. 8, 2014, Orbital Sciences Corp. elected to scrub that day’s launch attempt of an Antares rocket from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Va., due to unusually high levels of space radiation – an example of the ways in which space weather can affect human technology. Monitoring for space radiation – which refers …
ExoplanetsPowerful Planet Finder Turns Its Eye to the Sky
After nearly a decade of development, construction and testing, the world’s most advanced instrument for directly imaging and analyzing planets around other stars is pointing skyward and collecting light from distant worlds. The instrument, called the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), was designed, built, and optimized for imaging giant planets next to bright stars, in addition …
Deep SpaceWatch the 2014 Quadrantid Meteor Shower Live on Ustream
Peaking in the wee hours of Jan. 3, a little-known meteor shower named after an extinct constellation, the Quadranids, will present an excellent chance for hardy souls to start the year off with some late-night meteor watching. The Quadrantids have a maximum rate of about 80 per hour, varying between 60-200. The very young moon will set early, presenting an excellent …
