AsteroidsOSIRIS-REx Swoops Over Sample Site Osprey
This view of sample site Osprey on asteroid Bennu is a mosaic of images collected by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft on May 26. A total of 347 PolyCam images were stitched together and corrected to produce the mosaic, which shows the site at 0.2 inches (5 mm) per pixel at full size. The spacecraft took these …
EarthNew 3D Mapping Technique Improves Landslide Hazard Prediction
Slow-moving landslides, places where the land creeps sluggishly downhill over long periods of time, are relatively stable — until they aren’t. When they become unstable, which can happen for a variety of reasons — including heavy rain, snowmelt, earthquakes and volcanic activity — landslides can quickly turn catastrophic, especially in populated areas. “It’s important to …
EarthNASA Fosters Innovative Ways to Understand Biodiversity
The Yellow-billed Cuckoo has soft brown wings, a white belly, a long tail with black and white spots, and is running out of places to live. The cuckoo’s population in its native breeding range in the eastern United States has declined in recent decades due to urbanization, heat waves and other factors. Climate change will likely …
EarthNASA’s SAGE III Instrument Observes Aerosol Spike from Australian Fires
The devastating southeastern Australian bushfires that started last September spewed smoke and aerosols higher into the atmosphere than some Earth-observing instruments have ever measured. After months of hot and dry weather, the fires erupted in the heavily populated areas of New South Wales and Victoria burning millions of acres of land, destroying thousands of homes, …
Deep SpaceAstronomers Revisit First ‘Einstein Ring’ In Archival Data
Determined to find a needle in a cosmic haystack, a pair of astronomers time traveled through archives of old data from W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea in Hawaii and old X-ray data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to unlock a mystery surrounding a bright, lensed, heavily obscured quasar. This celestial object, which is an …
EarthIce Melt Linked to Accelerated Regional Freshwater Depletion
Seven of the regions that dominate global ice mass losses are melting at an accelerated rate, a new study shows, and the quickened melt rate is depleting freshwater resources that millions of people depend on. The impact of melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica on the world’s oceans is well documented. But the largest contributors …
ISSNASA Networks Empower Commercial Crew: Supporting 1st Commercial Launch of NASA Astronauts From U.S.
On May 30, a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft launched from the historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the International Space Station as part of SpaceX’s second demonstration mission under the Commercial Crew Program — the first mission to launch American astronauts on American rockets from American soil to the …
The SunNew Sunspots Potentially Herald Increased Solar Activity
On May 29, 2020, a family of sunspots — dark spots that freckle the face of the Sun, representing areas of complex magnetic fields — sported the biggest solar flare since October 2017. Although the sunspots are not yet visible (they will soon rotate into view over the left limb of the Sun), NASA spacecraft …
EarthNASA Supercomputers Power COVID-19 Research
NASA is flexing its supercomputing muscle to help crack some of the most pressing questions surrounding COVID-19, from basic science on how the virus interacts with cells in the human body to genetic risk factors to screening for potential therapeutic drugs. In addition to its support of Earth, planetary, aerospace, heliophysics and astrophysics projects, the …
