James WebbA Tale of Two Telescopes: WFIRST and Hubble
Editor’s note, Sept. 23, 2020: The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) was officially renamed the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on May 20, 2020. NASA’s Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), planned for launch in the mid-2020s, will create enormous cosmic panoramas. Using them, astronomers will explore everything from our solar system to the edge of the …
EarthWhen It Comes to Water, You Have to Think Global
Earth is a pale, blue dot when seen from space. Its blue color is due to our home planet being 71% covered in water. NASA monitors Earth’s water from space, the skies, ground stations on land, ships sailing the seas and even with apps on mobile phones. While Earth is so wet it looks blue …
EarthNASA Celebrates Earth Day With Downloadable Art
When Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders snapped the iconic Earthrise image, it captured the imagination of the people on Earth and helped to inspire the first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970. In the image, our planet hangs at a gibbous phase, as a far-off world rising in the night sky, and reminds us of …
The SunRocket-Borne Telescope Detects Super-Fine Strands on the Sun
New images from a NASA sounding rocket provide the highest-resolution views ever captured of the Sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, revealing fine strands of million-degree solar material. The images show loops as thin as 125 miles across in areas that appear dim and fuzzy in other Sun-watching telescopes. It’s the first direct observation of the …
EarthNASA Reports Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Depletion Hit Record Low in March
Ozone levels above the Arctic reached a record low for March, NASA researchers report. An analysis of satellite observations show that ozone levels reached their lowest point on March 12 at 205 Dobson units. While such low levels are rare, they are not unprecedented. Similar low ozone levels occurred in the upper atmosphere, or stratosphere, …
EarthSimulating Early Ocean Vents Shows Life’s Building Blocks Form Under Pressure
Where did life first form on Earth? Some scientists think it could have been around hydrothermal vents that may have existed at the bottom of the ocean 4.5 billion years ago. In a new paper in the journal Astrobiology, scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory describe how they mimicked possible ancient undersea environments with a …
AsteroidsOne Step Closer to Touching Asteroid Bennu
After the successful completion of its “Checkpoint” rehearsal, NASA’s first asteroid-sampling spacecraft is one step closer to touching down on asteroid Bennu. Yesterday, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft performed the first practice run of its sample collection sequence, reaching an approximate altitude of 246 feet (75 meters) over site Nightingale before executing a back-away burn from the …
ISSNASA Astronauts Jessica Meir and Andrew Morgan’s Scientific Journeys aboard the Space Station
On April 17, NASA astronauts Andrew Morgan and Jessica Meir wrap up their stay aboard the International Space Station. They return to Earth along with their Russian colleague, cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka. During Morgan’s 272 days and Meir’s 205 days in space, the pair contributed to hundreds of scientific experiments aboard the orbiting laboratory. Before they …
MarsNASA’s Curiosity Keeps Rolling As Team Operates Rover From Home
For people who are able to work remotely during this time of social distancing, video conferences and emails have helped bridge the gap. The same holds true for the team behind NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover. They’re dealing with the same challenges of so many remote workers — quieting the dog, sharing space with partners and …
