ArtemisSimulations are ‘Great Days’ for NASA’s Artemis I Launch Team
By Anna HeineyNASA’s Kennedy Space Center NASA is preparing for the first uncrewed flight test next year of the agency’s powerful new rocket and spacecraft in development for the Artemis lunar exploration program. The Exploration Ground Systems team of launch controllers who will oversee the countdown and liftoff of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket …
MarsNASA Adds Return Sample Scientists to Mars 2020 Leadership Team
In the fall of 2019, the Mars 2020 rover team welcomed ten members to serve as Returned Sample Science Participating Scientists. Scheduled to launch in July 2020 as NASA’s next step in exploration of the Red Planet, the Mars 2020 mission will search for signs of past microbial life, characterizing the planet’s climate and geology, …
EarthNASA Prepares for New Science Flights Above Coastal Louisiana
Updated April 7, 2020: Due to the current coronavirus situation, NASA’s Delta-X field campaign deployment has been postponed until later in the year. The scientific returns of the project are not expected to be impacted by this change of plans. Delta-X, a new NASA airborne investigation, is preparing to embark on its first field campaign …
MarsNASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Undergoes Memory Update
From Feb. 17 to Feb. 29, 2020, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) will go on hiatus from its science mission and its relay operations while engineers on Earth conduct long-distance maintenance. During the hiatus, other orbiters will relay data from the Mars Curiosity rover and Mars InSight lander to Earth. The maintenance work involves updating …
Deep SpaceFindings From NASA’s Juno Update Jupiter Water Mystery
NASA’s Juno mission has provided its first science results on the amount of water in Jupiter’s atmosphere. Published recently in the journal Nature Astronomy, the Juno results estimate that at the equator, water makes up about 0.25% of the molecules in Jupiter’s atmosphere — almost three times that of the Sun. These are also the …
EarthAn Innovator in International Food Security
Growing up in Uganda, Catherine Nakalembe always loved geography but never imagined she’d work with NASA. It wasn’t until several computer science classes in college that the University of Maryland, NASA-funded researcher developed an interest in satellite data and mapping which led her into a career helping communities use satellite data to increase food security. …
AsteroidsStatus Update: OSIRIS-REx Osprey Flyover
On Feb. 11, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft safely executed a 0.4-mile (620-m) flyover of the backup sample collection site Osprey as part of the mission’s Reconnaissance B phase activities. Preliminary telemetry, however, indicates that the OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter (OLA) did not operate as expected during the 11-hour event. The OLA instrument was scheduled to provide ranging …
EarthNASA Flights Detect Millions of Arctic Methane Hotspots
The Arctic is one of the fastest warming places on the planet. As temperatures rise, the perpetually frozen layer of soil, called permafrost, begins to thaw, releasing methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These methane emissions can accelerate future warming — but to understand to what extent, we need to know how much …
AsteroidsNew Horizons Team Uncovers a Critical Piece of the Planetary Formation Puzzle
Data from NASA’s New Horizons mission are providing new insights into how planets and planetesimals – the building blocks of the planets – were formed. The New Horizons spacecraft flew past the ancient Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth (2014 MU69) on Jan. 1, 2019, providing humankind’s first close-up look at one of the icy remnants of …
