Earth2019 Ozone Hole is the Smallest on Record Since Its Discovery
Abnormal weather patterns in the upper atmosphere over Antarctica dramatically limited ozone depletion in September and October, resulting in the smallest ozone hole observed since 1982, NASA and NOAA scientists reported today. The annual ozone hole reached its peak extent of 6.3 million square miles (16. 4 million square kilometers) on Sept. 8, and then …
MarsMars 2020 Unwrapped and Ready for More Testing
In this time-lapse video, taken on Oct. 4, 2019, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, bunny-suited engineers remove the inner layer of protective antistatic foil on the Mars 2020 rover after the vehicle was relocated from JPL’s Spacecraft Assembly Facility to the Simulator Building for testing. “The Mars 2020 rover will be collecting …
EarthNASA Map Reveals a New Landslide Risk Factor
In the deadly 2018 earthquake in the Indonesian city of Palu, intense shaking changed solid ground into a landslide of flowing mud, multiplying the death toll and economic impact. A new paper shows that this disastrous effect was triggered by a previously unknown risk factor: flooding rice fields for farming. Soil liquefaction, which causes this …
EarthCaltech, NASA Find Web of Ruptures in Ridgecrest Quake
A new study of Southern California’s largest earthquake sequence in two decades provides new evidence that large earthquakes can occur in a more complex fashion than commonly assumed. The analysis by geophysicists from Caltech and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, both in Pasadena, California, documents a series of ruptures in a web of interconnected faults, with …
Deep SpaceTen Highlights From NASA’s Van Allen Probes Mission
After seven years of operations, and upon finally running out of propellant, the second of the twin Van Allen Probes spacecraft will be retired on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019. Spacecraft A of the Van Allen Probes mission will be shut down by operators at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland. The …
MarsMars InSight’s ‘Mole’ Team Peers Into the Pit
UPDATED at 12 p.m. EST (9 a.m. PST) on Nov. 6, 2019 The InSight team continues to assess the heat probe this week. Having determined the lander’s robotic arm wasn’t holding the mole in place, they retracted the arm and took new images to see how the pit that formed around the mole has changed. What …
EarthJoint Polar Satellite System’s Microwave Instrument Fully Assembled
The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Joint Polar Satellite System-2 spacecraft, scheduled to launch in 2022, has been fully assembled and has begun environmental testing. A next-generation instrument that detects microwave radiation from the Earth’s atmosphere and surface, ATMS provides atmospheric temperature and moisture data that is critical …
ArtemisNASA Commits to Future Artemis Missions With More SLS Rocket Stages
NASA has taken the next steps toward building Space Launch System (SLS) rocket core stages to support as many as 10 Artemis missions, including the mission that will carry the first woman and next man to the Moon by 2024. The agency intends to work with Boeing, the current lead contractor for the core stages …
EarthTwo Decades of Rain, Snowfall from NASA’s Precipitation Missions
NASA’s Precipitation Measurement Missions (PMM) have collected rain and snowfall from space for nearly 20 years, and for the first time in 2019, scientists can access PMM’s entire record as one data set. PMM includes two missions – the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), which orbited Earth from 1997 to 2015, and its successor, the …
