MarsScientists Explore Outback as Testbed for Mars
This week, scientists from NASA’s upcoming Mars 2020 mission joined their counterparts from the joint European-Russian ExoMars mission in an expedition to the Australian Outback, one of the most remote, arid regions on the planet. Both teams came to hone their research techniques before their missions launch to the Red Planet next summer in search …
MarsNASA-JPL Names ‘Rolling Stones Rock’ on Mars
More photos and videos as they become available: https://go.nasa.gov/MarsRocks For decades, the music of The Rolling Stones has had a global reach here on Earth. Now, the band’s influence extends all the way to Mars. The team behind NASA’s InSight lander has named a Martian rock after the band: ‘Rolling Stones Rock.’ The Rolling Stones …
Deep Space30 Years Ago: Voyager 2’s Historic Neptune Flyby
Thirty years ago, on Aug. 25, 1989, NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft made a close flyby of Neptune, giving humanity its first close-up of our solar system’s eighth planet. Marking the end of the Voyager mission’s Grand Tour of the solar system’s four giant planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — that first was also …
EarthBoreal Forest Fires Could Release Deep Soil Carbon
Increasingly frequent and severe forest fires could burn generations-old carbon stored in the soils of boreal forests, according to results from the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) funded by NASA’s Earth Science Division. Releasing this previously buried carbon into the atmosphere could change these forests’ balance of carbon gain and loss, potentially accelerating warming. Canada’s Northwest …
EarthGRACE-FO Shows the Weight of Midwestern Floods
In May 2019, after the wettest 12 months ever recorded in the Mississippi River Basin, the region was bearing the weight of 8 to 12 inches (200 to 300 millimeters) more water than average. New data from the U.S.-European Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission, which launched in May 2018, showed that there …
ISSData Rate Increase on the International Space Station Supports Future Exploration
NASA recently doubled the rate at which data from the International Space Station returns to Earth, paving the way for similar future upgrades on Gateway, NASA’s upcoming outpost in lunar orbit, and other exploration missions. This new data rate will enable the space station to send back more science data faster than ever before. NASA’s …
ExoplanetsNASA Gets a Rare Look at a Rocky Exoplanet’s Surface
A new study using data from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope provides a rare glimpse of conditions on the surface of a rocky planet orbiting a star beyond the Sun. The study, published today in the journal Nature, shows that the planet’s surface may resemble those of Earth’s Moon or Mercury: The planet likely has little …
ISSRobotic Tool Operations Bring In-Space Refueling Closer to Reality
NASA’s Robotic Refueling Mission 3 (RRM3) completed an initial set of tool operations.
EarthStudents Create App to Warn of Dangerous Dust Storms
In the southwestern United States, a looming wall of dust can bear down frightfully fast on communities, ruining visibility for drivers and becoming a breathing hazard that can have long-lasting health effects. The National Weather Service uses satellite data to forecast these dust storms, and now four Maryland high-school students designed an app called DustWatch, …
