ArtemisNASA’s Mobile Launcher on a Roll
By Danielle Sempsrott NASA’s Kennedy Space Center On June 27, 2019, NASA’s mobile launcher made its last solo trek to Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Pad 39B for final testing before its next roll to the pad with the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion for the launch of Artemis 1. As part of NASA’s …
Deep SpaceGoddard’s Contributions to NASA’s New Dragonfly Mission
Yesterday, NASA announced the selection of its fourth mission in the New Frontiers portfolio: Dragonfly, an octocopter lander (a Mars rover-size, drone-like vehicle) that will explore the prebiotic organic chemistry of Titan, the biggest of Saturn’s 62 known moons and an intriguing ocean world with a dense, hazy atmosphere and methane seas. NASA Goddard’s Melissa …
ArtemisNASA Eyes GPS at the Moon for Artemis Missions
GPS, a satellite-based navigation system used by an estimated four billion people worldwide to figure out where they are on Earth at any moment, could be used to pilot in and around lunar orbit during future Artemis missions. A team at NASA is developing a special receiver that would be able to pick up location …
MarsMars 2020 Rover’s 7-Foot-Long Robotic Arm Installed
In this image, taken on June 21, 2019, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, install the main robotic arm on the Mars 2020 rover. (A smaller arm to handle Mars samples will be installed inside the rover as well.) The main arm includes five electrical motors and five joints (known as the …
ExoplanetsNASA’s TESS Mission Finds Its Smallest Planet Yet
NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered a world between the sizes of Mars and Earth orbiting a bright, cool, nearby star. The planet, called L 98-59b, marks the tiniest discovered by TESS to date. Two other worlds orbit the same star. While all three planets’ sizes are known, further study with other telescopes …
AsteroidsTunguska Revisited: 111-Year-Old Mystery Impact Inspires New, More Optimistic Asteroid Predictions
Every single day, many tons of tiny rocks – smaller than pebbles – hit the Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrate. Between frequent shooting stars we wish on in the night sky and the massive extinction-level asteroids that we hope we never see, there is a middle ground of rocks sized to make it through the atmosphere …
EarthThe Water Future of Earth’s ‘Third Pole’
Himalaya. Karakoram. Hindu Kush. The names of Asia’s high mountain ranges conjure up adventure to those living far away, but for more than a billion people, these are the names of their most reliable water source. Snow and glaciers in these mountains contain the largest volume of freshwater outside of Earth’s polar ice sheets, leading …
ExoplanetsMain Instrument for NASA’s WFIRST Mission Completes Milestone Review
Editor’s note, Sept. 23, 2020: The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) was officially renamed the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on May 20, 2020. In order to know how the universe will end, we must know what has happened to it so far. This is just one mystery NASA’s forthcoming Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) mission will …
James WebbNASA’s Webb Telescope Tech Improves Patients’ Vision
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will deliver never-before-seen views of the universe, acting as a high-tech extension of human vision as it gazes deep into the cosmos at distant light invisible to our eyes. Now, a technology used in the development of Webb is used by eye doctors here on Earth, to actually improve human …
