ISSUsing an ACE with “Two-Faces” to Build New 3D Structures
When micron-size particles spontaneously self-assemble into 3D structures and replicate themselves, this will transform how we think about creating tiny machines. The Advanced Colloids Experiment-with Temperature control-1 (ACE-T1) aboard the International Space Station is studying the controlled self-assembly of micron-size particles, each about 1/100th of a human hair in diameter. In this experiment, tiny suspended …
Deep SpaceFirst Stellar Occultations Shed Additional Light on Pluto’s Atmosphere
Scientists on NASA’s New Horizons team say the spacecraft succeeded in observing the first occultations of Pluto’s atmosphere by ultraviolet stars, an important goal of the mission’s Pluto encounter. These data, stored on New Horizons’ digital recorders since last summer’s encounter and recently transmitted to Earth, confirm several major findings about Pluto’s atmosphere. Approximately four …
The SunMinXSS CubeSat Deployed From ISS to Study Sun’s Soft X-Rays
On May 16, 2016, the bread loaf-sized Miniature X-Ray Solar Spectrometer, or MinXSS, CubeSat deployed from an airlock on the International Space Station to begin its journey into space. The NASA-funded MinXSS studies emissions from the Sun that can affect our communications systems. MinXSS will operate for up to 12 months. The CubeSat observes soft …
EarthNASA Satellite Data Could Help Reduce Flights Sidelined by Volcanic Eruptions
A volcano erupting and spewing ash into the sky can cover nearby areas under a thick coating of ash and can also have consequences for aviation safety. Airline traffic changes due to a recent volcanic eruption can rack up unanticipated expenses to flight cancellations, lengthy diversions and additional fuel costs from rerouting. Airlines are prudently …
Deep SpaceSwept Up in the Solar Wind
From our vantage point on the ground, the sun seems like a still ball of light, but in reality, it teems with activity. Eruptions called solar flares and coronal mass ejections explode in the sun’s hot atmosphere, the corona, sending light and high energy particles out into space. The corona is also constantly releasing a …

Deep SpaceFirst Global Topographic Model of Mercury
NASA’s MESSENGER mission has unveiled the first global digital elevation model (DEM) of Mercury, revealing in stunning detail the topography across the entire innermost planet and paving the way for scientists to fully characterize Mercury’s geologic history. The global topographic model is among three new products from the Planetary Data System (PDS), a NASA-funded organization …
Deep SpacePluto’s Interaction with the Solar Wind is Unique, Study Finds
Pluto behaves less like a comet than expected and somewhat more like a planet like Mars or Venus in the way it interacts with the solar wind, a continuous stream of charged particles from the sun. This is according to the first analysis of Pluto’s interaction with the solar wind, funded by NASA’s New Horizons …
EarthNASA Study: Rising Carbon Dioxide Levels Will Help and Hurt Crops
Elevated carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere may increase water-use efficiency in crops and considerably mitigate yield losses due to climate change, according to a new NASA study. The results, published in the journal Nature Climate Change on April 18, show some compensation for the adverse impacts of temperature extremes and water scarcity caused by …
