Deep SpaceCitizen Scientists Help NASA Researchers Understand Auroras
Space weather scientist Liz MacDonald has seen auroras more than five times in her life, but it was the aurora she didn’t see that affected her the most. On the evening of Oct. 24, 2011, MacDonald was sitting in front of her computer at her home in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Forecasts predicted a geomagnetic …
EarthNASA Analyzes March 7 U.S. Pacific Northwestern Storm System
During this season of El Nino influenced Pacific storms, NASA has been analyzing the storms that brought rain and snow to the U.S. West Coast. NASA’s RapidScat instrument spied tropical-storm-force winds in a weather system affecting the Pacific Northwestern U.S. and southwestern Canada on Sunday, March 6 and Monday, March 7. NOAA’s GOES-West satellite provided …
James WebbNASA’s James Webb Space Telescope Secondary Mirror Installed
The sole secondary mirror that will fly aboard NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope was installed onto the telescope at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, on March 3, 2016. The Webb telescope uses many mirrors to direct incoming light into the telescope’s instruments. The secondary mirror is called the secondary mirror because it …
ISSLooking Back at the #YearInSpace
Like all journeys off planet Earth, it started with a flash, and a roar. NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on March 27, 2015. With a successful landing 340 days later on March 1, 2016, the pair completed one of the most ambitious missions …
EarthNASA’s IMERG Measures Flooding Rainfall in Peru
Heavy rainfall recently caused flooding, landslides and power outages in some areas of Peru. NASA’s Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) measured that rainfall by using a merged precipitation product from a constellation of satellites. GPM is the Global Precipitation Measurement mission, which is a satellite co-managed by NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency …
The SunA Moment in the Sun’s Atmosphere: NASA’s Science During the March 2016 Total Solar Eclipse
As the moon slowly covers the face of the sun on the morning of March 9, 2016, in Indonesia, a team of NASA scientists will be anxiously awaiting the start of totality – because at that moment, their countdown clock begins. They plan to take 59 several-second exposures of the sun in just over three …
EarthNASA Finds Drought in Eastern Mediterranean Worst of Past 900 Years
A new NASA study finds that the recent drought that began in 1998 in the eastern Mediterranean Levant region, which comprises Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey, is likely the worst drought of the past nine centuries. Scientists reconstructed the Mediterranean’s drought history by studying tree rings as part of an effort to …
The SunEclipse Season Begins for NASA’s SDO
The 2016 spring eclipse season of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory began Feb. 19, 2016. These seasons – a time when Earth blocks SDO’s view of the sun for a period of time each day – last around three weeks and happen twice a year near the equinoxes. The eclipses are fairly short near the beginning and …
MarsMAVEN Observes Mars Moon Phobos in the Mid- and Far-Ultraviolet
NASA scientists are closer to solving the mystery of how Mars’ moon Phobos formed. In late November and early December 2015, NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission made a series of close approaches to the Martian moon Phobos, collecting data from within 186.4 miles (300 kilometers) of the moon. Among the data returned …
