An animation of satellite imagery over the course of 10 days shows a series of low pressure areas pummeling the Pacific Northwest. The video, created by the NASA/NOAA GOES Project at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland combined visible and infrared imagery from NOAA’s GOES-West satellite. The animation shows a series of storms …

A new video from NASA shows the successful installation of the first of 18 flight mirrors onto the James Webb Space Telescope Structure, at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The installation of the first mirror is the beginning a critical phase of the observatory’s construction. In the 1 minute and 8 second …

After 20 years in space, ESA and NASA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, is still going strong. Originally launched in 1995 to study the sun and its influence out to the very edges of the solar system, SOHO revolutionized this field of science, known as heliophysics, providing the basis for more than 5,000 scientific …

Twenty years ago, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, a cooperative effort between NASA and the European Space Agency, launched into space and revolutionized our study of the sun and a scientific discipline called heliophysics – the study of how the sun’s influence spreads out in all directions, able to dramatically affect the space environment near …

Recently, the James Webb Space Telescope’s “pathfinder telescope,” or “Pathfinder” completed its second super-cold optical test that resulted in the first checkout of specialized optical test equipment designed to illuminate the telescope’s optics through to the instrument focal planes, and the procedures used to operate this test equipment. While the actual flight elements of NASA’s …

Digital measurements of millions of trees indicate that previous studies likely overestimate the amount of carbon stored by temperate U.S. forests, according to a new NASA study. The findings could help scientists better understand the impact that trees have on the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Although it is a well-established fact that trees …

Two active regions sprouted arches of bundled magnetic loops in this video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory taken on Nov. 11-12, 2015. Charged particles spin along the magnetic field, tracing out bright lines as they emit light in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. About halfway through the video, a small eruption from the active region near the …

Astronauts have been living in space on an orbiting laboratory longer than many high school students have been alive. This month marks 15 years of continuous human presence on the International Space Station. When the first crew docked with the station for Expedition 1, the science control center at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in …

Recently inside the clean room at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, engineers successfully completed two deployments for the James Webb Space Telescope’s “wings” or side portions of the backplane structure that fold up. The wings and telescope structure are essential because they make up the telescope’s carbon fiber framework which will hold …
